HIV, coronavirus and community organizations

In terms of individual health, the pandemic that has been raging since 2020 has sent HIV and its cause behind the political and popular public scene.

Reductions and interruptions have been imposed by massive health measures: load shedding in services, difficulty for a medical appointment, carrying out screening and laboratory analyses, cancellation of informative group meetings, difficulty in joining people at risk (homeless people, drug users, sex workers, individuals with a mental health profile), restricted accessibility to usual meeting places.

On balance, there is an alarming resurgence of STBBIs and a new positioning of community organizations that are reviewing their situation in order to resume their level of activity, taking into account the vagaries of the coronavirus.

In this generalized situation and on the eve of the IAS conference, community organizations and those involved in the fight against HIV want to obtain additional support from decision-makers to continue their actions. Their role during the COVID-19 pandemic was important in making care accessible to vulnerable populations. “It was the community organizations that saved face to reverse the trend and the very high contamination rates [with the coronavirus]. This network needs to be better funded, and it needs to be much more involved. It knows the realities better than anyone.” Isabelle Ruelland, researcher and associate professor at UQÀM, La Presse, February 22, 2022.
