MAINS-BSL: « En-VIH de savoir !? »

September 10th, 2010

Founded in November 1994, the Mouvement d’Aide et d’INformation Sida Bas-Saint-Laurent (MAINS-BSL) is a non-profit community organization working on HIV/AIDS issues in the regions of Bas-Saint-Laurent, Gaspésie, and the Magdalen Islands.

It was initiated by workers and volunteers as an information, awareness, prevention, assistance, and support network for people in the region living with HIV/AIDS and their loved ones.

One of the team’s objectives is to establish, build, and support HIV/AIDS prevention strategies in the region, in collaboration with suitable organizations and partners.

One of their projects in this vein is a multimedia kit, « En-VIH de savoir !? », a set of HIV/AIDS information tools for all school, community, and institutional workers who work with young people between the ages of 12 and 25.

Since these community workers listen directly to the needs of the young people they support, they are the best people to set the goals for their own interventions. This kit puts a range of different tools at their fingertips, which they can customize to fit their own styles and which can help them adapt their approach to suit the situation.

The intervention tools are divided into four themes:

  • Romantic and sexual relationships
  • HIV and other STIs (Sexually transmitted infections)
  • Condoms
  • People living with HIV

« En-VIH de savoir !? » offers a range of different materials: multimedia presentations, games, first-person accounts, group activities, questionnaires, and even a 3-D video.

Information and reference documents to support the facilitator’s work complete the set.

This project is the fruit of intense collaboration with valuable community, health, and educational partners as well as several young people. It was made possible by a grant from the Public Health Agency of Canada.
