– Prevention –

TODAY, PREVENTING HIV MEANS:

  • Awareness and access to information = modes of transmission, risk of transmission of HIV and other STIs (Sexually Transmitted Diseases), methods of prevention…
  • Access to methods of prevention = male and female condoms, sterile injecting equipment… In addition, new prevention technologies, like microbicides or circumcision, for which more research is needed
  • Access to testing
  • Access to treatments recognized for their role in reducing the risk of transmission

TO GET THERE, WE NEED:

  • Sustainable financing for continuous global access to prevention
  • Intervention approaches that are targeted and adapted to communities and individuals
  • Strategies based on evidence – not on ideological convictions
  • An approach (especially concerning testing) that is systematically founded in respect for human rights
  • A global effort to reduce poverty and all factors contributing to marginalization and vulnerability, which play a key role in the epidemic
